Job Hunters: Stop Being So Polite (Thoughts on managing from my new book, Your Management Sucks!)

Think of this as personal management:

Stop being so polite and start being provocative. Employers seeking to fill a position have a sea of well-dressed robots reciting chapter and verse from the proverbial “Guide To Landing Your Dream Job”. Problem is, that approach is boring and played out…..and it SUCKS.

What should you ask:

• Why is competitor “X” eating your lunch?
• Do you have a strategy to reverse this?
• I do. Would you like to hear it?

Does this kind of approach carry risks? Of course. But not as big a risk as being perceived as just another bland nobody. The fact is, intelligent and creative managers will appreciate your verve, even if they know it’s how you market yourself. The weak and insecure may not like it but do you want to work for them?
