When The Truth Is Found To Be Lies

The Coen Brothers’ 2009 film, ”A Serious Man,”  is built around the 1967 Jefferson Airplane classic, ”Somebody To Love. ”

It is a typical Coen Brothers’ tangled story of despair, masterfully executed and focused on a Big Bang epiphany that all of the most cherished truths, vaunted seers and wise men are about as smart and right with their theories of life – as a village idiot.

They know zero. In fact, less than zero, because in their certainty, they lead us to dead end paths all lit by the street signs of LIES.

The truth is a strange concept: everyone says they want it but when they hear it, they often recoil in horror, anger or both.

What happens in the workplace when you tell a team member, or worse yet a senior executive you may report to, that their performance is mediocre? Even when this cold, hard statement is true?

Well, we often fail to discover the answer to that because we don’t tell the truth. Instead, tend to compliment the very work we disrespect so that everyone can feel absolutely wonderful, comfortably protected by a wall of lies.

But that’s hardly the worst of this enigma. The fact is, we often don’t know the truth:

  • Is global warming real or an epic hoax?
  • Is death really part of life?
  • Are sins real or figments of the marketers of the great religions’ imaginations?
  • Is anything impossible?

Tomes are written on these subjects–all based on wild speculation. And precisely because we have no idea of the veracity of it all, we concoct convenient props that camouflage the complexity of it all. Every single one of them bold-faced lies.

The only truth is that we don’t know the truth. We grope through life, the thoughtful among us that is, looking for answers in a fog of grey where all of our most important actions are judgment calls. Nothing more.

For one, I don’t know for sure:

  • The best way to grow my company.
  • The most inspired way to mentor people.
  • The best use of my money.
  • The best way to spend my time.

In the absence of absolute knowledge, I guess. And something tells me that the best guess I make is that the high priests of truth know less than I.

They’ve never heard Grace Slick sing.
