I see IT in their eyes.
It is a lack of pride in the companies they have been hired to run, or that they inherited. To them it is just a job, a means of earning a living or of fulfilling a responsibility.
That is light years away from the person who loves the business they run, manage, work in and on. They don’t have a job or a responsibility, per se. They have a passion and that emotional attachment, that sense of mission, that determination to continuously raise the bar on the company they are proud of — well, that’s contagious.
Because they love the business, they can lead it. This is far removed from simply having a title on your business card. That gives you a designation, yes, but no one is motivated to take a hill with you for the sake of a designation.
Unless the person at the top of an organization, regardless of its size, is a proud enthusiast for the essence of entity, she cannot lead it. She may own it but ownership, power, brute force–these are all far removed from the majesty of a person who admires–no adores–the enterprise they lead and how this love of company gets wired through the entire team.
Every time I see an organization that is tired, dispirited and dysfunctional, it ALWAYS traces back to the suit in charge. The guy who runs the place because, well, he just happens to be there, and for some distorted reason, he hates it.

So If you have to love it–lead it. What happens If you despise it?
Broken city.
All of which leads to bankruptcy or upheaval.
Which will it be?
The same is true for a country.
If you don’t love it, you can’t lead it.

THIS IS SO TRUE WITH SO MANY COMPANYS OUT THERE. They are stuck in the way things have been for the past 20 years that they lose focas of the world that is turning around us. We must bring back the pastion of what we love to due by leading by exsample.
